The NJPW NEVER Openweight Championship was introduced in 2012 as a title with no weight class restrictions, encouraging a hard-hitting, physical style. Tomohiro Ishii, Katsuyori Shibata, and Hirooki Goto have all had defining reigns, with Shibata's stiff-striking matches over the title becoming legendary in puroresu circles. The NEVER title has built a reputation for consistently producing some of NJPW's most intense matches.
