Gym title belts for BJJ, MMA and boxing

Write the rules first, then order one belt per division. How to set up an in-house gym title, which build to choose, and what a matched set costs.

An in-house gym title works when the rules are written down before the belt is ordered: who can compete, how a champion is decided, how long they hold the belt and how their name is recorded. Once those are settled, order one belt per division with your gym's logo on it. A custom belt starts at $275, and a set of five SD belts for five divisions is $1,100.

This guide is for owners and coaches of BJJ, MMA, boxing, kickboxing and wrestling gyms who want a title that members chase.

A title belt is not a rank belt

In Brazilian jiu-jitsu, "belt" usually means rank: white, blue, purple, brown and black. A rank belt shows what a student has learned. A championship belt shows who won a title. Keep the two apart in your gym, or members will confuse them.

A title belt is a prize, so it can take any design and any strap colour. Choose colours that do not copy your rank colours, and use a name for the title that makes the difference obvious, such as "Gym Lightweight Champion".

Write the rules first

A belt with no rules becomes a trophy that sits on a shelf. These five decisions give it meaning.

Decision Common options What to tell us
Divisions By weight class, by rank, by age, or open The exact name of each title, typed out
Who can compete Any member, or members above a set attendance or experience Nothing for the belt, but put the rules on the gym wall
How the champion is decided A tournament, a ladder, or a challenge match The date of the first title match
How long the champion holds it Until beaten, or for a fixed term Whether the belt passes on, so we can plan for names
When a champion leaves The title is vacated and the belt comes back to the gym Who will look after the belt in between

Start with the divisions you can actually fill. A title with one possible challenger is not a title. You can add divisions later, and repeat orders get 5% off with the code REPEAT5.

What goes on the belt

  • Centre plate: your gym's name or logo, with the sport if it helps.
  • Side plates: the division name, a crest, or the year the title began.
  • Name plate: the current champion, or a list of past champions. Name plate engraving is +$25.

Gym logos often have small text and thin lines. If yours does, look at the CNC build, which is made for finer detail. Send the sharpest logo file you have, and use artwork you own. The guide to belts for clubs, gyms, tournaments and events covers what to send and how to plan the order.

Which build suits a gym?

Build How the plates are made Suits 1 belt
SD (standard detail) Brass plates, cut and engraved to the design, finished by hand Most divisions, with a clear logo and lettering $275
CNC Brass plates, CNC-machined Logos with small text or a detailed crest $350
HD Zinc alloy plates cast in a mould made for the design, finished by hand A flagship title with the deepest 3D relief $550

You can add 24K gold electroplating for $20 per belt. It is a thin layer of real gold on the surface, so the belt is not solid gold. Plates are 2 mm as standard. 3 mm is +$50, 4 mm is +$100 and 5 mm is +$150.

Ordering a set for several divisions

A set looks best when every belt shares one design, with the division name changed on each. Five or more belts are 20% off each, and ten belts are 25% off each. Volume prices come off automatically in the cart.

Build 1 belt 5 belts, each 10 belts, each
SD $275 $220 $206.25
CNC $350 $280 $262.50
HD $550 $440 $412.50

Notice the sum at five belts. Four SD belts at full price are $1,100, and five SD belts at $220 each are also $1,100. The same is true of CNC ($1,400) and HD ($2,200). If you have four divisions, a fifth title costs nothing extra.

Sets beyond ten are a custom quote. If you are a larger organisation with several gyms, read the wholesale and bulk orders page.

An example title set for a BJJ gym

Here is how one gym with regular competition classes might set up five titles. Adjust the divisions to the members you have.

Title Who it is for Wording on the belt
Lightweight Adults in the lighter weight classes Lightweight Champion
Heavyweight Adults in the heavier weight classes Heavyweight Champion
Women's Women of any weight Women's Champion
Juniors Junior members, in a size to suit Junior Champion
Open Any member, any weight Open Champion

Five SD belts with the same design come to $1,100 in total. Each belt carries the gym logo on the centre plate, and only the wording changes. Name plate engraving for the first champions is +$25.

Sizes from juniors to heavyweights

Belts are available in any size from kids to jumbo. If you run junior classes or a heavyweight division, tell us the sizes you need when you send your brief. A belt that is passed between champions must suit each of them, so think about your smallest and your largest likely holders. The belt sizing and fit guide explains how to measure.

Timing around a fight night or tournament

Work back from the date of your event. You receive a free digital mockup within 48 hours of your brief, with unlimited revisions. The build is then about 4 weeks from approval, or 7 days with express at +$80 per belt. Matched sets of five or more usually take 6 to 8 weeks. Shipping is free worldwide by express courier, with tracking, and import duties are prepaid.

These are estimates, not guarantees. The timing guide shows how to count back.

Presenting the belt

The ceremony gives the belt its meaning. Present it in front of the gym, read out the champion's record, and take a photograph. Pin the photograph up with the belt's rules. If you hold events, announce the next title match early, so members train for it.

Next step

List your divisions, your logo file and the date of your first title match. Then open the custom belt builder and send them. To see finished designs first, browse the full catalogue.

Questions

What is a gym title belt?

It is a championship belt that a gym awards to the winner of its own title, such as a lightweight BJJ champion or a heavyweight boxing champion. It is separate from the rank belts that show a student's level.

How many belts does a gym need?

One for each division you run. Start with the divisions you can fill and add more later. At five belts or more, each belt is 20% off.

Can the belt carry our gym's logo?

Yes. Send a sharp logo file that you own or have permission to use, and we include it in the free mockup. The CNC build is made for finer detail if your logo has small text.

Can I order junior sizes?

Yes. Any size from kids to jumbo is available. Tell us the sizes you need before you approve the mockup.

How do I record each champion's name?

Name plate engraving is +$25. Say in your brief how you want to record champions, so the design leaves room for it.
