Choose a championship belt when the award is the headline prize, it passes from winner to winner, and people will want to pose in it. Choose a trophy when you need many awards, a formal tone or the lowest cost. A custom belt starts at $275, so a common plan is one belt for the top prize and trophies or certificates for everything else.
This guide compares the two for leagues, offices, gyms and clubs, and shows what a belt costs over several seasons.
Belt and trophy side by side
| Question | Championship belt | Trophy |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per award | From $275 for a custom belt | A basic trophy costs less |
| How it is used | Worn and held up for photographs | Held up and placed on a shelf |
| Passing it on | Works well as a travelling award, with name plates for each winner | Works well too, usually with a plaque or a base |
| Personal feel | Your own name, logo and strap colours | Your own text on a standard shape |
| Best number of awards | One to a few | Many |
| Tone | Playful, competitive, a bit theatrical | Formal and traditional |
| Storage | Laid flat on a shelf or hung on a wall | Stands on a shelf |
When a belt is the better choice
- There is one headline prize. A league title, a sales record or a gym champion deserves more than a small cup.
- There is a rivalry. A belt gives the chasing group something to talk about all season.
- The award travels. A belt that is handed over each year turns the last result into a story for the next one.
- Photographs matter. People enjoy posing in a belt, and the picture will be shared.
- The group has a sense of humour. A belt invites a speech, a bit of theatre and a crowd.
When a trophy is the better choice
- You have many categories. Ten awards at belt prices add up quickly.
- The event is formal. Some events call for a traditional look.
- The budget is tight. A basic trophy costs less than a custom belt.
- Space is limited. A trophy stands on a small shelf, while a belt needs flat space or a wall.
A hybrid: one belt, smaller awards for the rest
You do not have to pick one. Give the belt to the top prize and use trophies, medals or certificates for the rest.
| Award | Best format |
|---|---|
| Season champion or top salesperson | Custom belt, passed on each year |
| Runner-up and third place | Trophy or medal |
| Most improved, best newcomer | Trophy or certificate |
| Last place, as a joke | A second belt with the same design and different wording |
A last-place belt only works if the group enjoys it. Keep the wording friendly and agree it with the league or team first.
What a belt costs over several seasons
A belt costs more at the start. If it travels from winner to winner, that cost is spread over every season it is used. The sums below use our prices for a belt that is kept and passed on, before any name plate engraving.
| Belt | Price | Per season over 5 | Per season over 10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| SD, standard finish | $275 | $55 | $27.50 |
| SD with 24K gold (+$20) | $295 | $59 | $29.50 |
| CNC, standard finish | $350 | $70 | $35 |
| HD, standard finish | $550 | $110 | $55 |
SD means brass plates, cut and engraved to the design and finished by hand. CNC means brass plates CNC-machined for finer detail. HD means zinc alloy plates cast in a mould made for the design, finished by hand, with the deepest 3D relief. 24K gold is a thin layer of real gold electroplated on the surface, so the belt is not solid gold.
Make the award mean something
A belt only works if people care who holds it. Give the title a proper name, such as "Office Heavyweight Champion", and publish the rules for winning it. Say when it changes hands, for example at the end of each quarter, and who presents it. Take a photograph of every holder wearing it. Over a few seasons those photographs become the history of the league or team, and they cost nothing.
Give the holder a small job too, such as keeping the belt safe and bringing it to the next event. A little responsibility makes the award feel real.
Passing a belt between winners
A travelling belt needs three decisions. First, who keeps it between seasons, and who pays to send it on. Second, how winners are recorded. Name plate engraving is +$25, and you can plan space for it in the design. Third, who it needs to fit. Belts are available in any size from kids to jumbo, so say which sizes you need.
The guide to league and fantasy belts goes through these questions for leagues, and company and sales-award belts does the same for workplaces. Look after a travelling belt with a few simple habits, which you can pass on with it. The care guide lists them.
Buying belts for several winners
If every winner keeps a belt, volume prices help. Five or more belts are 20% off each, so SD belts are $220 each, CNC belts are $280 each and HD belts are $440 each. Ten belts are 25% off each, at $206.25, $262.50 and $412.50. Sets beyond ten are quoted. Repeat orders get a further 5% off with the code REPEAT5. The wholesale and bulk orders page has more on sets.
Timing
A custom belt takes about 4 weeks to build from the day you approve the free digital mockup, which arrives within 48 hours of your brief. An express 7-day build is +$80 per belt. Matched sets of five or more usually take 6 to 8 weeks. These are estimates, not guarantees. Order before the season starts, so the belt is in hand when the prize matters.
