The WCW Cruiserweight Championship was introduced in 1996 and immediately became one of the most exciting titles in professional wrestling. Rey Mysterio Jr., Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, and Billy Kidman produced a series of technically outstanding matches over the title that drew widespread critical acclaim. The WCW Cruiserweight division is credited with introducing mainstream American audiences to lucha libre and puroresu-influenced wrestling for the first time.
