The WWF Light Heavyweight Championship was introduced in 1997 to showcase smaller high-flying athletes inspired by lucha libre and Japanese wrestling. Taka Michinoku was the inaugural champion, bringing a style of athleticism rarely seen in WWF at the time. Though short-lived as a regular TV feature, the title is a niche collector's piece representing WWF's experimentation with international wrestling styles at the dawn of the Attitude Era.
